When terrorists destroyed New York’s World Trade Center- mere blocks from the studio I had maintained for years in downtown Manhattan (the landlord had evicted me four weeks prior to September 11th)- the world grew especially bleak. Manifesting my own anxieties and those of a nation in this series directly related to the attacks; the figures tumbling though these claustrophobic images all too readily suggest the lives that disappeared in the spectacular disasters, but they also reflect the sensations we all felt of being suddenly cut adrift from our safety line. In these paintings on paper, as in our lives, disorder had translated into fear.
